New York Building Congress Centennial
A Year of Centennial Celebrations
When the New York Building Congress was founded in 1921, New York City and its building industry looked very different. The city’s subway system was a fraction of what it is today, the Empire State Building was a decade away from breaking ground and the building industry was fragmented by trade. Then, our founders created an organization where contractors, architects, engineers, developers, owners and all those with a role in the built environment can convene and share ideas. Over the last 100 years, we have watched the Building Congress grow and evolve as our members have come together to shape New York into the incredible city we recognize today.
To commemorate this history, we invite you to participate in a year of centennial celebrations beginning January 2021. We will be hosting an event each month to acknowledge and honor important milestones and individuals that shaped the Building Congress and the industry. From our highly anticipated signature events to the new Built New York gallery exhibit, documentary and commemorative book, we are excited to come together to celebrate the past, present and future of the building industry.
The Building Congress must also thank our Centennial Commission, whose enthusiasm and guidance has been invaluable in developing next year’s programming.
We look forward to our 100th anniversary celebrations and hope you will join us!

Charter Members
In April 1921, 25 architects, engineers, contractors, and “labor men” met in the office of world-renowned architect Robert D. Kohn. These men were concerned that the building and construction industry was disorganized. They left that meeting with the goal of creating an organization of owners, bankers, architects, engineers, contractors, subcontractors, manufacturers, suppliers, and labor representatives.
In the words of Mr. Kohn: “We started out with the idea that the only hope for effective improvement in the industry was to render through cooperation of all of its elements some measure of service which the public had the right to demand of us.”
Out of this meeting was born the New York Building Congress.
100 years later, ten of the original members still remain an active part of the organization.
What We Build
While our exhibit at AIANY Center for Architecture closed its doors on September 18th, you’ll still be able to view it here and at our Centennial Ball Celebration on November 18th!
