NEW YORK, January 29, 2004 – Frank J. Sciame,
a New York City builder known for highly designed and technically
sophisticated construction projects, was elected Chairman of the
New York Building Congress following the organization’s Annual
Membership Meeting today.
Regarded as a builder with the vision of an architect and the eye of a constructor, his talent has contributed to his firm, Sciame Construction LLC, being entrusted with the construction of some of the metropolitan area’s most prestigious cultural, educational, commercial and retail facilities. Some of his completed projects include the restoration of the Victory Theater and Central Synagogue, new educational facilities for Spence School , The Calhoun School, Lycee Francais, and The Millennium High School. In addition, Sciame also completed the unique Toys R Us flagship store in Times Square , the New York Public Library – South Court , The Museum of Jewish Heritage in Battery Park City and the Harvard Club on 44 th Street . His firm also is in pre-construction for projects at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, a new Academic building at Cooper Union, and The Museum of Arts and Design. Current projects under construction include Sarah Lawrence Heimbold Visual Arts Center , Thurgood Marshall Academy , and the Pierpont Morgan Library.
Mr. Sciame, who succeeds Skidmore Owings & Merrill Partner Marilyn Jordan Taylor, takes over the Building Congress during a period of increased visibility for the industry but also at a time of uncertainty about the future of the City’s public capital programs and private development. As Chairman, he will help shape the organization’s policies and programs and continue its distinguished history as an advocate of innovative design, responsible development and infrastructure investment.
“The Building Congress is a unique organization that focuses on issues of concern to all sectors of the industry,” Mr. Sciame said. “We are proud to be an important part of the exciting and challenging projects now underway in New York, including rebuilding the World Trade Center site and expanding the region’s transportation network. Beyond these, the Building Congress and the companies, agencies, unions and associations that comprise its membership, consistently supports investment in the City’s infrastructure, such as schools and power plants, and in projects that will help our economy grow, such as the 2012 Olympics and development of Manhattan’s far West Side.”
In addition to Sciame Construction, founded in 1975, Mr. Sciame formed Sciame Development, Inc., in 1996. The development company is currently engaged in a Liberty Bond financed mixed-use, commercial / residential rental project on Historic Front Street in the South Street Seaport Historic District, and has secured City Planning Commission approval for a proposed 177,000 sq. ft., mixed-use, condominium tower in Lower Manhattan.
Mr. Sciame has shown his commitment to New York City through years of civic leadership. He received the 1997 Chairman’s Award from the New York Landmarks Conservancy and the 2003 “Pillar of New York” award from the Preservation League of New York State. He currently serves as President of the City College of New York Alumni Association, and on the Boards of the South Street Seaport Museum and the New York Landmarks Conservancy.
“The New York Building Congress has been blessed through its 83 years with outstanding leadership,” said Building Congress President Richard T. Anderson. “No two persons better exemplify this history of devotion and intelligent service to the industry and the City than Marilyn Jordan Taylor and Frank Sciame.”
