Business community wrestles with the reality of Mamdani as next NYC mayor

New York City business leaders say they’re bracing for Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani to push for higher taxes and a rent freeze — but they’re betting state lawmakers and fiscal challenges will keep his democratic socialist agenda in check. In interviews, city business leaders questioned how Mamdani would deliver on his ambitious campaign promises but pledged to work with the new mayor. Some lamented the victory of a democratic socialist who supports raising taxes to fund expansive social programs, and said they take some comfort in that it will be a challenge to persuade state lawmakers to do so.Kathryn Wylde, who is president of the Partnership for New York City, has spent recent months briefing executives on the limits of mayoral power, and said “nobody in the business community is concerned about Zohran turning New York socialist, because they know he can’t.” An out-of-balance city budget, for example, would spur the state’s fiscal monitor, the Financial Control Board, to step in. “I think people now understand that the protections are in place and that the mayor does not have the powers to restructure our economy,” she added.
